FAQs about panel replacements
When do I need a panel replacement?
1
Panel replacements are one of the most invasive home electrical services, so we do not recommend them lightly. If you are experiencing tripping breakers, warm or buzzing breakers, or have an outdated fuse panel or unsafe Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, please give us a call or text. We will evaluate thoroughly before recommending replacement.
What should I expect when having a panel replacement done?
2
Panel replacements do take some time, between 4-8 hours in most cases. If you do not have an outside main disconnect, you will have to contact your utility provider to have power disconnected. If you do have an outside main disconnect, this step is not necessary. Power will remain off in the entire home for the duration of the replacement. We pull permits on all panel replacements, so an inspector will come out to inspect our work. We will make any necessary adjustments in order to pass inspection, then the inspector will turn in for utility reconnection (in homes without an outside main disconnect). Finally, your utility company will come out to reconnect power (in homes without an outside main disconnect).
Do I have to have a panel replacement for an EV charger?
3
Sometimes, but not always! In cases where your home is not using as much power as possible, but your panel is “at capacity” (meaning your panel has as many breakers in it as it can hold), it can be necessary to replace the panel. However, there are some instances where a professional electrician can look at other options, like combining lighting circuits, in order to avoid this. We also perform load calculations before making any recommendations about EV chargers so that we can see the full picture electrically. Call or text to schedule a complimentary in-person visit for an evaluation if you are considering having an EV charger installed.
Does having a panel replacement give my home more power?
4
Your electrical panel only affects how your home uses the power supplied to the panel. If you are in need of a larger electrical capacity with more circuits than your current panel can hold, that would require a combined service change out and panel replacement. Give us a call or text if you have any questions!
